Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- Silicon dioxide is manufactured as a food additive in the form of synthetic amorphous silica; in nature it is also the main component of minerals such as sand and quartz.
- Where it is used
- Used as an anti caking agent and flow enhancer in powdered foods, spice and seasoning blends, dried powdered products and food supplements.
- Health note
- In its 2018 re-evaluation EFSA found no indication of toxicity at the reported uses and use levels, but stated that the EU specifications do not adequately characterise the additive and that the particle size distribution needs to be clarified, so the existing ADI of 'not specified' could not be confirmed. The 2024 follow-up opinion added nano specific considerations and, because of the data gaps, applied a margin of exposure (MOE) approach instead of deriving an ADI.
- Halal assessment
- Its source is mineral and synthetic, and no animal input is reported in its production. The carrier or processing aid in the finished product may differ, so consult the manufacturer's halal certificate for a definitive answer.
