Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- Talc is a naturally mined magnesium silicate mineral that is processed by flotation and purification. Its composition varies according to the deposit it comes from.
- Where it is used
- Used as an anti caking agent and flow enhancer. Under the EU and Turkish Food Codex lists it is permitted in 28 food categories, chiefly dried powdered foods and tablets, cheese products, salt and seasonings, and food supplements. Talc is also used for the surface treatment of products such as rice and sausages.
- Health note
- In its 2018 re-evaluation EFSA found the toxicological data for the individual silicates insufficient, could not derive an acceptable daily intake (ADI) and considered the former group ADI of 'not specified' obsolete. The Panel concluded that the safety of these additives when used as food additives cannot be assessed. It was noted that talc may contain impurities such as crystalline silica (alpha quartz), aluminium, nickel and fluoride, that the current specifications set no maximum limits for these, and that talc deposits may naturally contain asbestos like minerals.
- Halal assessment
- Its source is a natural mineral and no animal input is reported in its production. The carrier or processing aid in the finished product may differ, so consult the manufacturer's halal certificate for a definitive answer.
