Kandilla mumu
E-number category
Glazing agent, gas, sweetener
Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- A wax of plant origin obtained from the leaves of the candelilla plant (Euphorbia antisyphilitica), which grows in semi-desert regions; it is a complex mixture of wax hydrocarbons, resin esters, lactones and free alcohols and acids.
- Where it is used
- Used as a glazing agent, particularly for confectionery, chewing gum and the surface treatment of fruit. It is authorised in the lists of EU Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 and the Turkish Food Codex Regulation on Food Additives.
- Health note
- In its 2012 re-evaluation (EFSA Journal 2012;10(11):2946) EFSA did not establish a numerical acceptable daily intake (ADI). The Panel noted that absorption from the gastrointestinal tract is expected to be low, that there is no concern for genotoxicity and that the exposure calculations left sufficient margins of safety, and concluded that use under the currently authorised conditions would not be of safety concern.
- Halal assessment
- Its source is plant-based (leaves of Euphorbia antisyphilitica); no animal input is reported in the EFSA opinion. Because glazing blends may combine it with materials of animal origin such as beeswax or shellac, the composition of the final product may vary. Consult the manufacturer's halal certificate for a definitive answer.
