Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- A surface glazing agent obtained from the resinous secretion that the lac insect (Kerria lacca) leaves on tree branches. Its source is animal (an insect secretion).
- Where it is used
- Used in confectionery, chocolate dragees, the peel of some fruits, pill coatings and as a glazing agent.
- Health note
- It is considered safe at ordinary levels.
- Halal assessment
- Because it comes from an insect and its secretion, and because insects can also become mixed into it during production, it has been marked in this site's classification as haram or unsuitable. There may be differences of opinion between the schools of law on this matter; the consumer should assess it according to the opinion they follow and, if sensitive, should prefer products with a certified plant-based glazing agent (e.g. carnauba wax).
