What it is & how it is made

In the EU and Turkish Food Codex lists the code E 905 corresponds to microcrystalline wax: a wax of mineral origin obtained from the refining of crude oil, consisting of long-chain branched and cyclic hydrocarbons.

Where it is used

Used as a surface treatment agent and glazing agent at quantum satis (the technologically necessary amount) on non-chocolate confectionery, chewing gum and decorations, coatings and fillings, except fruit-based fillings. It is authorised in the lists of EU Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 and the Turkish Food Codex Regulation on Food Additives.

Health note

In its 2013 re-evaluation (EFSA Journal 2013;11(4):3146) EFSA could not establish an ADI because no long-term toxicity and carcinogenicity studies were available. The Panel reported no concern for genotoxicity and concluded that the conservative exposure estimates at the maximum permitted level left a sufficient margin of safety compared with the NOAEL established for the chemically closely related high-viscosity mineral oils, so that use at the currently authorised levels would not be of safety concern.
