Hidrojenlenmiş poli-1-desen
E-number category
Glazing agent, gas, sweetener
Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- The EU specification lists this code as hydrogenated poly-1-decene; the name “microcrystalline wax” shown in the catalogue is incorrect, as that substance carries the code E905. Hydrogenated poly-1-decene is a synthetic mixture of oligomers made from decene units and then hydrogenated, with a purity of at least 98.5 per cent.
- Where it is used
- It is used as a glazing and coating agent. It forms a thin film on the surface of confectionery, nuts and dried fruit, giving shine and keeping pieces from sticking together.
- Health note
- In the EU it is permitted only in specific foods and at maximum levels. It passes through undigested and is not absorbed; no health risk has been reported at normal use levels.
- Halal assessment
- It is a wholly synthetic substance of petrochemical origin, produced without animal raw materials, so no halal concern has been reported for the substance itself. The coated product as a whole should still be assessed.
