Detailed information
- What it is & how it is made
- A salt formed from aspartame (E 951) and acesulfame K (E 950); when dissolved in water it dissociates into these two sweeteners.
- Where it is used
- Used as an intense sweetener in beverages, desserts, confectionery, chewing gum and table-top sweeteners. It is authorised in the lists of EU Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 and the Turkish Food Codex Regulation on Food Additives.
- Health note
- Because E 962 dissociates into aspartame and acesulfame K, its safety assessment rests on the evaluations of those two substances; for acesulfame K, EFSA's 2025 opinion (EFSA Journal 2025;23(4):9317) established an acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 15 mg/kg body weight per day. Since it contains aspartame, point 2.3 of Annex III to EU Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 requires the label to state that the product contains a source of phenylalanine (where the ingredient list gives only the E number, the wording 'contains aspartame (a source of phenylalanine)' is used); this serves to inform people with phenylketonuria. EFSA's re-evaluation of E 962 is ongoing.
- Halal assessment
- Its components are products of chemical synthesis; the production route of the amino acids in aspartame may differ between manufacturers. Consult the manufacturer's halal certificate for a definitive answer.
