Should I wash eggs with dirty shells before storing them?

2026-07-17

Answer

According to the Ministry, eggs should not be washed unless they are about to be used. The shell carries a natural protective layer; washing damages this layer and can increase the risk of microorganisms passing through the pores and of spoilage. The Ministry recommends keeping eggs in their own packaging in the refrigerator, and — if an egg is very dirty — cleaning it only briefly and gently just before use.
