According to the Ministry, outdoor spaces such as a balcony or a windowsill are no substitute for a refrigerator. Temperatures there do not stay constant through the day; sun, wind and the difference between day and night create freeze-thaw cycles that can increase spoilage and microbiological risk in perishable foods such as meat, milk and cooked dishes. The Ministry recommends keeping food in a refrigerator running at 0-4°C, and food kept for longer periods in a deep freezer at -18°C or below.
