Do pasteurisation, UHT and homogenisation make milk harmful?

2026-07-22

Answer

No; according to the Ministry they do the opposite, making milk microbiologically safe. Pasteurisation and UHT are controlled heat treatments that inactivate disease-causing microorganisms, and milk's protein, calcium and other essential nutrients are largely preserved in the process. Homogenisation is merely a physical process that distributes milk fat evenly; it does not adversely affect nutritional value. Pasteurised and UHT milk are safer than raw milk.
