Phenylketonuria (PKU)

Inability to metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine. Aspartame (E951) must be strictly avoided because it converts to phenylalanine in the body; protein intake is tightly controlled.

⚠️ Medical disclaimer:This content is for general information and does not replace individualized medical treatment. PKU requires a lifelong, very strict metabolic diet under medical supervision; the daily phenylalanine amount is individual. Always work with a metabolic physician and dietitian. Because aspartame (E951) converts to phenylalanine during digestion, the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) does not apply to people with PKU and this sweetener must be avoided; watch for the 'contains a source of phenylalanine' label warning.
